FDA-approved dermal fillers, including the ultra-popular Restylane™, Radiesse™, and RHA® Collection are injectable treatments that restore volume and smooth wrinkles and skin folds.
While the dermal filler process itself is quick and easy, it’s important to remember the key to getting the most out of treatment lies in the aftercare process. Following your provider’s aftercare instructions helps ensure optimal results and maintains longevity.
In this article, we will discuss what you can expect following your dermal filler appointment and five aftercare tips to help you achieve your desired results.

Immediately After Treatment
Zero downtime is usually needed following a dermal filler appointment, however, you may experience minor bruising or swelling.
Your provider may give you ice packs to reduce the risk of swelling, and light makeup may be worn to cover any bruising. It’s important to give your skin at least 24 hours makeup-free to keep the injection site clean.
Aftercare Tips
Here are 5 aftercare tips to help your healing process go smoothly and ensure the best results:
(Your provider will give you full aftercare instructions, so make sure to defer to those when in doubt)
1 No Touching!
One of the most important tips to follow post-filler treatment is to avoid touching the injection area.
Aside from the risk of germs and infection, applying pressure to the area may stimulate the area enough to cause migration and move the filler.
2 Sleep on Your Back
If you’re a stomach sleeper, you may need to adjust for a few nights!
As mentioned in number 1, another way to minimize pressure on the treatment area is by being mindful of your sleeping position. It’s best to sleep on your back or side for the first 24-48 hours following your filler appointment.
3 Beat the Heat
It’s normal for your skin to be sensitive following your filler appointment, so it’s recommended to avoid UV exposure as well as saunas, hot tubs, and vigorous exercise.
Stay dry, keep your body temperature down, and wear sunscreen (that last step is always a must!)
4 Choose Gentle Products
As mentioned previously, you may experience sensitive skin for a few days following your filler appointment.
Opt for a gentle cleanser and moisturizer, and avoid using products that contain active ingredients (for example: glycolic acid, retinol, or any products with fragrance).
5 Hydration is Key
Staying hydrated is always a must, especially when getting fillers.
Hydration helps your body heal faster so that you can see results sooner. This also means avoiding things that may dehydrate you (aka alcohol) so it’s best to avoid any adult beverages for a few days at minimum.
