Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels

Our skin is the largest organ of our body and it serves as a protective barrier that shields us from external factors like pollution, UV rays, and bacteria. However, with time, various issues like acne, wrinkles, dark spots, and hyperpigmentation can affect our skin which might compromise our self-esteem and confidence.

While there are numerous skincare products available in the market that promise to address these concerns, they may not always provide satisfactory results. This is where chemical peels come in as an effective solution to combat skin problems.

What are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are a popular cosmetic treatment that involves the application of chemical solutions to the skin to exfoliate damaged outer layers and promote cell regeneration. This treatment can do the following:

  • Improve skin texture
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Address dark spots
  • Help even out skin tone

Chemical peels are typically performed on the face, but they can also be used on the neck, chest, and hands.

Types of Chemical Peels

Typically, chemical peels are divided into 3 types depending on the strength of the solutions and their ability to penetrate into your skin.

  • Light Chemical Peel: AKA superficial peel, it involves the use of mild acids such as lactic acid and glycolic acid to reduce acne breakouts, clear out clogged pores, and provide gentle exfoliation. It can also be an additional step for your facial treatments to make your skin look and feel softer and smoother.
  • Medium Chemical Peel: This uses relatively more concentrated solutions of glycolic acid and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) to penetrate deeper into your skin like our VI Peel here at Luminescence Aesthetics MedSpa. It can help reduce the appearance of mild to moderate fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage while evening out your skin texture.
  • Deep Chemical Peel: It uses concentrated solutions of TCA and phenols to penetrate deep into your skin and to address stubborn signs of aging, such as more pronounced fine lines and wrinkles, acne and other scars, and severe sun damage. Deep chemical peels can produce remarkable results with just one treatment session.

What to Expect During a Chemical Peel

The exact steps of a chemical peel treatment can vary depending on the type of peel and the individual’s skin concerns and needs. However, here is a general overview of what to expect during a chemical peel treatment:
Before the chemical peel treatment, you will typically have a consultation with a licensed provider to discuss your skin concerns, medical history, and any medications or skincare products you are using.

  1. Before the peel, your skin will be cleansed and prepped with a pre-peel solution to remove any excess oils and debris.
  2. The chemical solution will then be applied to your skin in a uniform layer using a brush, sponge, or cotton applicator. You may feel a tingling or stinging sensation as the solution is applied.
  3. Your provider will monitor your skin’s reaction to the solution and time the duration of the peel on your skin based on the type of peel being used.
  4. After the appropriate amount of time has passed, the chemical solution will be neutralized with water or a neutralizing solution.
  5. Post-peel care instructions will be provided based on the type of peel and the individual’s skin. This may include avoiding sun exposure, using gentle skincare products, and avoiding exfoliating treatments for a period of time.
