You may have heard of the saying, “Don’t frown! It’ll cause wrinkles!”
While it’s true that repeated muscle contractions in the face can cause wrinkles, the truth is that wrinkles are a natural part of aging.
As we age, wrinkles become more noticeable due to a loss of elasticity and collagen in the skin. Everyone ages at a different rate, therefore everyone’s experience with fine lines and wrinkles will be a bit different.
The good news is, there is a solution: Wrinkle Relaxers.
In this article, we’ll go over what wrinkle relaxers are and provide a step-by-step guide to what to expect from the treatment itself.

What Are Wrinkle Relaxers?
Wrinkle relaxers are FDA-approved neurotoxins that temporarily relax facial muscles to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
These cosmetic injections can be used on a variety of areas, including:
- Forehead lines – both vertical and horizontal
- Frown lines or “11” lines between the eyebrows
- Crow’s feet, which are lines that radiate around the eyes
- Underneath the eyebrows to provide a lifted look
One of the added pros of wrinkle relaxers is that they may also be used to prevent future wrinkles from forming!
There are a variety of different wrinkle relaxers to choose from, depending on your areas of concern and your injector’s preference. Some of the most popular (and what our injector at Luminescence uses) are Xeomin and Juveau.
What To Expect During the Treatment
Wrinkle relaxers are a popular cosmetic treatment as the procedure itself takes only minutes, with no downtime needed.
After a consultation with your provider to determine the best wrinkle relaxer for you, along with creating a customized treatment plan, you can expect the following to take place when you choose to move forward with the treatment:
- Your provider will cleanse the injection site and may choose to mark the injection areas with a pen.
- Your provider will inject the right amount of the wrinkle relaxer needed for the specific area. The injection itself is typically described as mildly uncomfortable, but not painful. Numbing cream is sometimes applied beforehand for maximum comfort.
- Following treatment, you may be given an ice pack to help reduce any bruising or swelling in the area.
- If swelling or bruising does occur, it typically subsides within days and makeup can be safely worn 24 hours after the treatment.
Most treatment sessions last an average of 10-15 minutes, making them a great option for those on the go.
Generally, results from wrinkle relaxers will last 3-4 months, depending on how quickly the body metabolizes the substance. It’s recommended to update your provider about your progress and to schedule follow-up appointments to monitor and maintain your results.
